SpaceX and Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk announced on Twitter Thursday morning that he has “verbal government approval” for his Hawthorne-based The Boring Company to build a Hyperloop underground tunnel system that will connect New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C.
Musk has previously talked about building a tunnel system underneath Los Angeles to alleviate “soul destroying” traffic.
Musk and his team are currently working on a 500-foot test tunnel in Hawthorne.
Like with many Musk tweets, the reaction was quick, varied and mostly skeptical. Many questioned the “govt approval” that he mentioned in the original tweet, something The Daily Breeze is looking to verify as well.
Even after Musk’s second tweet acknowledging that he still needs formal approval, there were some who questioned how quickly he could receive that.
Further more, some expressed concern over the actual possibility of even digging a tunnel under major cities in the first place.
Others, however, were supportive and excited for what the future holds.
